100 Innings of Baseball

Last Saturday morning at 8:30am, when most of us are sleeping or just sipping out morning coffee, hundreds of people were gathered for the start of the 100 Innings of Baseball Spectacular.
The fifth annual charity game was played at Adams Field in Quincy, Massachusetts, and has been a great fundraiser four years running.
The game’s annually hosted by Charity Hop and raises money to fight ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Here’s the deal. The first pitch was tossed Saturday at 9:00am, and the baseball was played continuously until at least 100 innings are in the book. That means that even in the middle of night, the teams were still grinding it out, likely somewhere in the ballpark of the 68th inning or so. The game lasted until Sunday afternoon.
The goal of the game was to raise over $100,000, with all the proceeds going to either the ALS Association (Massachusetts Chapter) or Curt’s Pitch for ALS, which was formed by Red Sox hurler Curt Schilling.
Since Schilling came to the Red Sox, the game’s raised over $373,000.
There were over 100 players expected to play, and yes, some even played the full 100 innings. Players could sign up as individuals or as full teams, as it was open to anyone 18 years of age or older. A good number of the participants were recreational league players.
Everyone who played in the game had the chance to receive a 20% rebate on the cost of their rec league baseball season as well. Not a bad deal.
Other incentives for makings donations include; Schilling autographed t-shirts, baseballs and jerseys. And anyone who raises over $1,000 gets a pair of tickets to Schilling’s postseason reception. There are plenty of reasons to at least give a little to this worthy cause, and the donations are obviously not confined to last weekend only. They go year round.
There was great food, good music, guest appearances and plenty of other fun things taking place over the entire Labor Day weekend.
