Devon White

Watching Shane Victorino and B.J. Upton patrol centerfield in the recent World Series got me thinking.

It got my mind rolling about other centerfielders who had a sick glove and a ton of speed. Instantly, my mind shot back to 1992.

The scene was Toronto, and the stage was Game 3. It was the top of the fourth, with two on and none out and David Justice at the plate.

In a scoreless game, Justice smoked a Juan Guzman pitch to dead center field. The only thing standing between a 2-0 Braves lead was Devon White.

The Blue Jays center fielder made an incredible, jaw dropping grab by leaping in front of the 400-foot marker in centerfield with his back to the field. The entire Skydome crowd was amazed, as were the Braves. Atlanta third baseman Terry Pendleton even passed Deion Sanders on the base paths for the automatic second out.

Justice’s deep shot was now a double play.

In the meantime, White fired off a perfect toss towards the infield. Jays third baseman Kelly Gruber snagged the ball and tagged out Sanders for the first triple play in postseason history.

Or was it?

Bob Davidson, the second base umpire, called Sanders safe, despite replays clearly showing Gruber had executed the tag before Sanders reached the base.

Regardless, White’s catch would go down in World Series history as one of the all-time greats. In was in the bottom of that same inning Joe Carter hit a walkoff home as the Jays would win 3-2 en route to their first title.

Thanks to one of the best plays we’ve seen, we’re giving some Old School Love to Devon White today.
