KFAN’s 24 Hours of Sludge

Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which the body’s immune system fails in its normal functions and instead forms antibodies that attack healthy tissues and organs.

Almost 90 percent of those diagnosed with lupus are women, with symptoms and diagnosis of the disease showing up between the ages of 15 and 45 in most women.

Recently, KFAN Radio-AM 1130 here in Minneapolis had an event called “24 Hours of Sludge.” KFAN’s own Cory “Sludge” Cove was on the air continuously for 24 hours, from about 2:00pm on Saturday, May 17 to the same time the next day. The main purpose of the event was to raise awareness of lupus and solicit donations to the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota for research, etc.

Cove himself donated money as well, by placing small wagers with on-air guests or asking one KFAN personality how many golf clubs he’d broken during his round on Saturday and pledging $25 per broken club. I didn’t listen continuously (you know, adult obligations like a job and a social life), but it seemed like a great event to raise awareness of a disease that seems not to get much attention. Cove pledged that even if you couldn’t donate, to please call him and keep him awake during the graveyard hours of the event, which surprisingly people did from 12:00am - 6:00am!

Featured guests during the broadcast included almost every KFAN radio personality and the president of the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota.
