Plaxico

Looks like Plaxico just went bankrupt.

The crazily athletic receiver with the one-of-a-kind name has probably suited up his last for the New York Giants, and possibly for the NFL altogether.

How far the mighty have fallen.

It’s an unprecedented act of self-sabotage that bends the mind and begs so many questions.

First of all, let’s start out by establishing this: If you feel like you need a firearm to enter, you’re probably going to the wrong club.

It’s incredible, really, to watch a crash-and-burn of this magnitude - especially when the idiocy quotient appears to increase exponentially with each new revelation in the story.

How on Earth do you accidentally let a gun go off in your pants? Why in the world would you, as a professional athlete adored by millions (theoretically) illegally carry a .40-caliber Glock?

Really, you were shot at an Applebee’s? That’s the most believable fib you could materialize?

Did Plaxico really order teammate Antonio Pierce to ditch the gun somewhere in New Jersey? Did the hospital fail to properly report the shooting after Plax checked in under a fake alias?

This is just the latest in a tremendous eight-week run of defiance that hasn’t been matched by any athlete this side of John Daly. The offenses include a suspension and $117.5K fine for missing a team meeting for “family issues”, a $45K fine for verbally abusing an official during a game, comments about officiating after the game and for throwing a football into the stands and a holdout of the first quarter the following week’s game after missing neck injury treatments.

Not a bad trainwreck for the guy who caught the winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII.

Plaxico could be looking at mandatory prison time if convicted, as carrying a loaded handgun is an automatic sentence.

It’s incredible that the receiver who burst onto the scene with 13 catches for 185 yards in the 2000 Citrus Bowl could be leaving the game and limelight the same way he entered it.

With a bang.
